Hurts So Good + My First Double-Digit Run!

Happy Sunday! Sundays are always bittersweet to me (when I don’t have to work on one, that is!). They’re a last day of freedom before the week starts back up, but it’s so easy to spend the whole day stressing and thinking about all you have to do when you get back to work. 

I intend to spend today relaxing and not worrying so much. It’s something I definitely need to work on, so I’m starting the day with a nice breakfast and a cup of tea, and once I get done with this post I’ll curl up with my book for a good long while.

I just had to share my long run from yesterday because it went so well and I’m pretty proud of myself. It wasn’t perfect. It was really, really hard and I walked a lot, but I had never run 10 miles before, so checking that off the list is a huge accomplishment in my book (yes, I’m tooting my own horn).

Luckily the weather cooperated and I got temps in the 50s to start, and the relative humidity was bearable. My last long run attempt was hampered by the worst humidity of my life and I was limited to four of an scheduled nine miles, so I was thrilled to see that the weather was going to be in my favor this time (one reason I stuck to running on Saturday instead of Sunday, because I knew it would be a little more gloomy today). 

Unfortunately, I knew pretty early on it was not going to be an easy run. I usually don’t have much of a problem running three or four miles, but I was struggling by mile three, so I was worried I wasn’t going to make it the full 10. Somehow I just kept going, though, walking when I needed to and sticking to my planned route. 

At mile 5, I ran across a black cat, which is always a good sign, right? It was super friendly and just wanted to rub up against my legs while I stopped to take a picture, and luckily no really bad luck befell me the rest of the way ;)


I was running in backup shoes, though, instead of my normal shoes because I had left them at my parents’ house last week, and I could feel blisters starting to form before I got to mile 6. It was another thing I just ran through because it wasn’t unbearable, but I’ll definitely be getting my shoes back before my next long run! And maybe investing in some more synthetic socks. 

It’s about two miles from my apartment to the riverwalk, which itself offers about a three-mile loop. After one loop, I ventured off into a neighborhood for about a mile, then made my way back to the riverwalk for another half a loop before starting to head back toward home. I’ve done a couple of long runs down there now, in addition to some local 5Ks, and I love it because it takes you through four city parks, and there are water fountains throughout the route. I filled up my water bottle at least four times during the run (it's small!), so I think the majority of my long runs will take place here now. I need reliable access to water!

My previous distance PR was 8 miles, so I was thrilled to beat that by two miles yesterday! I’m now done with Week 9 of half marathon training, now with seven weeks to go. I’ve got four more double-digit runs in my future before the Chicago Half, and I’m so happy to have this one under my belt. I doubt it gets easier, but hopefully I get stronger throughout these next seven weeks!
