Well, this hasn’t been the best week in the history of weeks. It’s been pretty tough, actually, but I won’t get into everything here. Despite it all, I’ve still managed to scrounge up some favorites for you!
The Nightingale: I mentioned last week that The Nightingale was book No. 26 of 2017. I finished it on Wednesday, and I couldn’t put it down for the entire second half of the book. It was dark and devastating and gritty and real, and I really enjoyed it. It’s not an uplifting book — it did cause me to have a nightmare that I had been shot several times, but that’s neither here nor there. We see all the time novels written about the heroic men of bygone wars, but this book celebrates the women, telling stories — based on real events! — that I had never heard before. It was remarkable.
Watching movies: I don’t know who I’ve turned into, but I’ve watched five movies in the last week, which is totally unlike me. I tend to stick to TV shows, but for whatever reason I’ve found myself clicking onto longer features this week. Last Friday, I started off with What If, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan (loved it). On Saturday, I got up early and saw The Big Sick (starring Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan) in an early bird feature at the movie theatre (REALLY loved it). Sunday, I watch To The Bone on Netflix, featuring Lily Collins as a young woman fighting an eating disorder (sad, but in a beautiful way, and ended on a positive note). I finally watched Moonlight on either Monday or Tuesday (it’s finally out on Amazon Prime). After the Oscar buzz, I’m not sure what I was expecting, but I thought it was excellent, if understated. Finally, last night I started watching Oh, Hello on Broadway (Nick Kroll and John Mulaney), but I couldn’t get all the way through it. I heard good things, but I thought it was… kinda dumb? Sorry, not sorry.
Skinny Pop: I forgot how much I loved this stuff. After a vacation full of treats, I’m trying to eat cleaner, but I’d really been missing my salty snacks. Enter White Cheddar Skinny Pop, which does the job with zero guilt.
This personality-type + dog matcher article: So if there are two things I find extremely interesting, they are understanding my personality type (INFP-T! aka “The Mediator”) and puppies. I follow multiple Twitter and Instagram accounts dedicated to cute dogs (corgis especially), and forward the best posts on to Kyle. When I stumbled upon this helpful little article, I couldn’t have been more delighted. Turns out, as an INFP I match best with a Tibetan Terrier (apparently that’s a breed??). But Kyle, who is also on the corgi train with me, got matched up with our dream pup as an ESFP (Entertainer) — it's fate! According to the article:
"Just look at their constantly smiling faces: Corgis are the life of the party, and they’re always ready to play. They’re so playful, in fact, that they often have trouble focusing on one task at a time.”
Pretty accurate. Also: destiny!
This video: OK, this is actually work related, but it was probably the highlight of my work week. The department that I'm in has been working really hard to get this story told, and the end result is absolutely phenomenal. I handle PR for this team, so I was very close to this story from its inception. If nothing else, watch just the first two minutes. You’ll suddenly find yourself interested in fencing! It’s epic.
That's all for this week. I'm looking forward to this weekend with a good run on Saturday and a little bit of a crazy Sunday with two family parties to attend. I hope your weekend is excellent!
