I’ll be honest. I don’t have a whole lot of new obsessions this week. I’m chugging along with half marathon training (for some reason dreading a three-miler this afternoon) and things are pretty business as usual at work.
That said, I do have a couple of Friday Favorites I’d like to share:
Every year for Father’s Day my family takes a day trip to Saugatuck, Michigan, to eat and peruse the little shops. And every year I spend too much money at one of the cute little boutiques in town. But this is a purchase I 100% do not regret. I’ve been looking for a dress like this for a while and striking out when trying it on, but I fell in love when I put this on. I didn’t buy it immediately, but came back just before we left for the day and snatched it up. It's not every day a shorty like me finds a maxi that doesn't drag on the floor! Luckily (for me, not for you), this is a wholesale brand that you can’t buy online, so I don’t have to worry about running into other people in the same dress, but I found a similar style here.
Embrace (Netflix documentary): I watched this on Netflix last night and really enjoyed it. It comes from Taryn Brumfitt, who once posted a before-and-after photo of herself with her post-baby-body as the “after” shot, and it went viral. Brumfitt is now working to advance the message of body positivity — and really the message that women are worth more than just their physical appearance — around the world. We all are susceptible to this trap, that we’ll be happy if we look a certain way, or people will like us more, but we have so much more to offer than what is on the outside. Women are not just ornaments. It’s a message you see more and more these days, but it still meets resistance from the less-evolved end of the gene pool. I was inspired to keep working on accepting my body in all its forms — I’m running a half marathon for heaven’s sake! And when I told Kyle I was “inspired to throw up middle fingers to the media and their beauty standards” he said, “You should do that regardless.” I have a good boyfriend.
That’s all I’ve got today! This weekend will include pups, baseball (and baseball nostalgia) and a six-mile long run, so it should be a pretty eventful one.
